Cardiac morphogenesis and function in zebrafish: the cardiac jelly

Over the past years, the Huisken lab has developed unique microscope systems to image and visualize zebrafish heart morphogenesis and function in vivo. Using a selective plane illumination microscope (SPIM) to capture the beating heart in 6D (x, y, z, t: time-point in cardiac cycle, T: time in development, color), I want to understand the mechanical properties of the developing zebrafish heart and how it functions as a pump. Of primary interest is the role of the embryonic cardiac jelly (CJ), a gel-like extracellular matrix (ECM) between the endocardium and myocardium.
